Creating Space on the Court – FREE Training Plan
Every coach has experienced the ‘bees to a honeypot’ scenario on court. All players are looking for the pass, none are in their own space and they certainly aren’t thinking about setting up for the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th phase.
Knowing how and when to create space is a learned skill and takes lots of practice to get right. You need to make your players understand why clearing and creating space is better for the team and stop them thinking about their urge to ball hog and receive every single pass down the court.
When coaching driving and clearing, I like to ask my athletes – how many players can receive the ball at once? When they realise the answer is 1 but there are 5 of them asking for the ball, I then like to get them to brainstorm – What should the other players be doing?
I want my players to know that:
- There should always be two options for the ball
- There should be depth down the court
- Clearing space pulls away the defender
- You need to read off the player in-front of you
A lot of this comes down to recognising what’s going on on court and reacting to the space needed. Once players begin to understand that clearing space is just as useful as getting the ball (because it pulls away a defender) they tend to be much more willing to do so.
If you’re looking for a way to implement some basic patterns into your next training session then download our free training session below.
Ask players to complete 10 repetitions of each pattern and complete each patten a minimum of 3 times so that they REALLY understand it.
Don’t forget to share your team giving it a go on socials and tag @netballexcellencetraining
