Using your Toolbox
We rely on our coaches for a lot. We want them to teach us all they know about the game to help us to grown and develop. But here’s a secret…they can’t do everything for you.
Coaches can only do so much to help you learn the skills, techniques and tactics needed for the game and then they need you to take it from there.
One week they might be teaching you how to receive the ball in front of your player, and the next week they might be wanting you to screen a player for an over pass. But with all these conflicting sessions, how do you know what to use when?
This is where your player initiative needs to come in.
When it comes to your match play, you need to be able to make decisions in the moment and not just try to replicate the practice you might have completed with your coach that week.
Try to envision every session, tip and skill as a tool. They can’t all be used at once, but they will all have a perfect time to be used to help you to win ball. The more sessions you complete, with any coach, the more tools you will have in your toolbox to use in different scenarios.
There is no one way suits all when it comes to match play and realising this early is often what allows players to excel.
So listen to what your coaches say, take part in and watch as much netball as you can, and keep adding to your toolbox!
